Slice of life

At its core, Thornbridge is a slice-of-life larp, which means much of the play comes from everyday interactions. You’ll attend seminars, share meals, hang out, walk to class with your closest friend, or perhaps argue quietly in a corner of the library. These small moments are the fabric of the larp and often hold just as much weight as the big turning points. Instead of trying to solve all of your character’s problems or “fixing” what ails them, this game is about meaningful presence, relationship-building, and finding depth in the ordinary. Your characters will continue to live on after their time at Thornbridge, and the goal is to set them on their way, instead of finishing their story.

24 hours in-game

The larp is played continuously from beginning to end, with no scheduled breaks in character. You’ll sleep, wake, dress, and exist as your character throughout the event, allowing players to immerse themselves in the world of Thornbridge. Whether you’re wandering the halls at 2 a.m., scribbling notes at breakfast, or watching someone fall apart in a hallway, everything is part of the story. Quiet moments and downtime are not breaks; they’re opportunities for reflection.
There will be a calibration system that allows you to align with your co-players as necessary within the setting.

Transgressive content

Thornbridge makes space for characters who cross social, emotional, and interpersonal lines. Themes like betrayal, manipulation, romantic tension, and power imbalance are present and supported in play.
Similarly, in the private sessions in the late night Noctis Circles, we expect players to act bravely and push each other’s characters for emotional and impactful storytelling.
All this will be supported by the calibration system, which ensures that players stay in control while allowing characters to make messy, meaningful choices.

Supernatural

While Thornbridge is not a power-based or mechanics-driven larp, the supernatural is part of the setting and tone. Players will portray vampires, changelings, witches, fireborn, and others whose identities are shaped by forces beyond the human norm. These Origins are vehicles for exploring transformation, legacy, and internal struggle, not tools for power play. We aim for the supernatural lens to add mood, symbolism, and freedom to explore who your character is becoming; not to focus on what they can do, or powers they may have.

Content in the larp

Thornbridge Academy is a larp built around emotional storytelling, layered character relationships, and internal transformation. The game’s content is shaped primarily by the characters, their connections, and the social structures they inhabit, cohorts, seminars, and Noctis Circles. While supernatural elements are present, they serve as a framework for exploring grounded human experiences: identity, power, belonging, and change. We aim to create a space where players can engage with challenging material in a supported and collaborative environment.

Main themes

The larp explores transformation, identity, longing, grief, power dynamics, and emotional risk. Many characters will wrestle with who they are becoming, how they relate to others, and what they’re willing to let go of to move forward. Relationships, romantic, antagonistic, familial, or fragile, will be central to most arcs.

This is intended to be a type 2 experience for most characters.

Unavoidable content

The following types of content are central to the design and will be present in every player’s experience to some degree:
Emotional intensity and internal struggle, Social pressure and complex relationship dynamics, Supernatural metaphors for real-world change, Moral ambiguity and difficult personal choices, The potential for failure, heartbreak, or loss.

While you’ll have control over how your character engages with these elements, encountering them in some form is part of the core experience.

Approach to the larp

Thornbridge Academy includes emotionally intense content by design, and players should come prepared to engage with the themes and potential triggers outlined in the calibration section.
While a calibration system is in place, and players are always free to leave a scene at any time, we expect everyone to take responsibility for their own engagement. This means knowing your limits, being honest with yourself about what you’re ready to explore, and approaching the experience with care and respect for others including accepting that others may engage in scenes you would prefer not to.

Thornbridge Academy uses a number of established safety and calibration systems to support immersive and emotionally intense play. The main points are outlined below, and can be read in detail in our calibration system document.
The main in-game tools are slow escalation and tap-out, both commonly used in many Nordic-style larps. These mechanics allow players to signal intent clearly, adjust intensity mid-scene, or pause a scene without breaking the fiction. The system is designed to be intuitive and respectful, giving players the ability to shape their experience moment to moment while maintaining trust and connection with others.

Thornbridge uses baseline expectations for interaction to help ensure shared understanding across players. Characters may experience shouting, emotional confrontation, psychological manipulation, crying, hugging, and romantic or intimate scenes, including touching and simulated intimacy. These are considered part of the play environment, and players should be prepared for them unless boundaries are clearly communicated otherwise. Some actions, like grabbing someone from behind or touching the chest or genital area, are not allowed under any circumstances. You’ll have time to communicate exceptions and preferences during workshops and pre-game discussions.

Costuming

As the larp is set in 1999, costuming for Thornbridge Academy will reflect the early 2000s, blending academic formality with personal expression. Gothic Academia can be many things, and during the school day, students will wear a uniform-style base, with room to adapt the look to your character’s Origin and personality. A changeling’s subtle glamor, a vampire’s old-world precision, or a fireborn’s untamed edges can all be reflected in how the uniform is styled. Outside of classes, students are free to wear their own clothing, so long as it fits the tone and setting of the larp and is reflective of the era.

For scenes involving potential nudity, we expect the “bikini area” to be covered at all times during the game for all genders.

The game ends with a formal school dance, and we expect students to dress accordingly. Whether your character shows up in traditional evening wear, something meaningful from home, or a carefully chosen statement, this is a chance to visually mark the change they’ve undergone during their time at Thornbridge. Formal doesn’t need to mean expensive, but it should feel intentional and expressive.
