Setting in the larp

Thornbridge Academy is a genre we are calling Gothic Academia. The larp is set at a supernatural boarding school hidden from the world. Its location shifts with each cycle, and is currently located at the shores of Lake Michigan. It’s a place of learning, but not for the usual liberal arts subjects. This is where people go when they are no longer who they were, and not yet who they will become. Set in 1999, we also hope to invoke some of the times before a cellphone was in everyone’s hands.

The characters at Thornbridge are not ordinary. They are vampires, changelings, witches, fireborn, and others whose lives have been marked by the supernatural. Some come from legacy bloodlines, others by accident or curse, but all have been called here for the same reason: they, and the change they are going through, is significant enough that the academy has decided they need additional guidance. Whether it’s a shift of body, power, identity, or fate, each character must face something that cannot be avoided. The academy does not offer a way out, but it does offer the space, the pressure, and the people that will shape what comes next. Some will emerge changed. Others may not emerge at all.

Thornbridge Academy is set in the year 1999. A time just before everything changed. There are no smartphones, no social media, and the outside world feels distant. This near-past setting allows for intimate, face-to-face interactions, handwritten notes, and quiet moments uninterrupted by modern noise.

All the students have been at Thornbridge for 9 months and are approaching the Reckoning, the time when they will learn whether they will be released and return to their normal lives or remain and stay for another term to learn their needed lessons.

Characters and Origins

At Thornbridge Academy, you’ll play a student standing at the edge of change. Characters come from different supernatural backgrounds, called Origins, but the focus is not on powers or abilities. These Origins exist to support character-driven storytelling, emotional symbolism, and themes of identity. They are not to create systems or mechanics. You won’t be casting spells or using supernatural stats. Instead, the larp uses these beings to explore ideas of grief, longing, instability, and becoming, giving players the freedom to tell meaningful stories that feel strange, beautiful, and personal.

The Origins represented at Thornbridge, amongst regular humans with power also include: vampires, who wrestle with control, hunger, and history; changelings, caught between the human world and fae influence; fireborn, shaped by elemental intensity, memory, or inherited destruction; witches, often tied to bloodlines, intuition, or ancestral knowledge; and Sirens, who feed on emotion and memory.

Each Origin comes with its own internal tensions and questions, but none dictate who your character must be. What matters most is what you do when your old self no longer fits, and something new begins to take shape.

“The Reckoning is not separate from study; it is its consequence. We do not teach our students what to become. We teach them how to endure becoming.”

– James Thornbridge

Expectation of our players

We expect players at Thornbridge to come ready to help build a meaningful and collaborative experience. This larp centers on transformation, emotional storytelling, and interpersonal tension, and it works best when everyone is invested in both their own character and the experiences of those around them. You don’t need to be an experienced larper, but you do need to be curious, respectful, and willing to contribute to the atmosphere we’re all creating together.

There will be some mandatory pre-game preparation involved. Players will be asked to connect with their cohort and their closest character ties before the larp to align expectations. You will also be expected to attend one or two online calls on Discord with your group and your Noctis Circle. These pre-game connections help ensure everyone arrives with a shared foundation, ready to dive into play without having to start from scratch. It also allows players to align on tone, pacing, and expectations within their smaller groups.

Lastly, we want to acknowledge that this is a larp that asks for emotional maturity. You’ll be invited to explore complex relationships, moments of vulnerability, and internal character shifts; not all of which will be easy. We have calibration tools in place to support you, but it’s important that players feel comfortable engaging with emotionally layered content and can navigate their own boundaries responsibly. Thornbridge isn’t the right fit for every player, and that’s okay. What matters most is that everyone who attends is ready to show up with care, presence, and respect for the shared experience.
